| Maple Bridge | |
After seeing much discussion on the Co-Mando (http://www.mandozine.com/) mailing list and reading Red Henry's page (http://www.murphymethod.com/redbridge.html) I decided to take a shot at building a one piece maple bridge for Coydog #2. I've uploaded some pictures of the process. |

I started out by tracing an outline of my existing ebony adjustable bridge onto some maple scrap I had left over from the Tiny Tele neck. |
Then I sliced off something close to the thickness I wanted. |
Trimmed it closer to my pencil outline. |
Sanded even closer to the pencil. |
Drilled holes and connected them with a scroll saw. |
Then thinned the saddle, cleaned everything up, and added compensation (matching my old bridge). |

As for the results on the mando? Well, I would subjectively say that the maple bridge did increase volume and maybe "tightened" up the sound a bit. Everything sounded very clean and clear. That being said, for this particular mando, while clarity is always a good thing, I was looking for something a little more "mellow." This mando has some tinny/scratchy characteristics on the A and E strings and the maple bridge just seemed to make those louder. BTW, I also made a bridge from Alder left over from the Tiny Tele body. Pretty much the same sound to my ears. For now, I think I'll stick with the ebony and if I find the wood, maybe try a one piece ebony. |
